How to Use Google Maps Street View

Navigating has come a long way since the days of wrestling with paper maps that never seemed to fold up right again once you opened them. Google Maps is one navigational tool that will help you get where you need to go.

What Is Google Maps?

Google Maps began back in 2005 as a proprietary web application of Google. Over the years, Google has enhanced the mapping service to increase its capabilities. Not only can you get step-by-step directions to get you places, you can also estimate distances and travel time between points, find your location, research routes, get real-time traffic information and share your location with others.

Google Maps Options

Google Maps has a number of options that will help you see your world in a variety of ways.

If you're looking for a specific place or a type of place, you can search within Google Maps. You'll get returns that you can click and save for later.

Once you get a map loaded, you can click on it to zoom in for extra detail. You can also zoom out to see a whole different perspective.

When you're trying to choose the best travel route to get from one place to another, Google Maps will give you all the pertinent information you need about landscape, construction and current traffic.

Use Google Maps Street View

Using the Google Maps Street View option is a fascinating way to really explore the world without even going anywhere.

With Google Maps open, click the menu in the top left corner. Search for a place within the Google Maps interface. Once the map shows the place, click the spot on the map where you want to see the street view. A little picture will appear at the bottom of the map. Click on the picture to go to Street View. You can then adjust your view with your cursor. When you're finished, click the arrow in the upper left corner to go back to the map. You can click the map again in a different location if you want to see another Street View perspective.

Google Maps Driving Distance

To get information about driving distances, open Google Maps and search for your starting location. Once this location opens and displays on the map, right-click at the spot from which you want to begin measuring. Choose "measure distance" from the pop-up menu. Click the spot you want to go, and Google Maps will display the distance between the two points. If you click elsewhere on the map, Google Maps will add the distance to your total.

Google Maps Satellite View

When you want to get another perspective on your world, Google Maps Satellite View is the way to go. With the basic Google Map application open to a location, click "satellite" icon in the lower left corner. Your view will instantly change to a satellite view from above. You can go back to the basic map view by clicking the "map" icon in the lower left corner.
