Fun DIY Party Decorations

If you're planning any kind of party, decorations are one of the first things to consider. But instead of buying party decorations that are generic, impersonal — and maybe even boring — why not put your crafting skills to use and DIY some decorations instead? Let's get started.

Make a Fancy Centerpiece

One of the quickest ways to add a statement to your table is by making an eye-catching centerpiece. This can be a classic floral bouquet using real or faux flowers, an impressively decorated cake, or a floating arrangement of colorful balloons. Keep in mind the theme and color scheme of your party, and choose a centerpiece that corresponds to them. For an easy DIY centerpiece, try a slightly different take on the usual floral centerpiece. Collect a variety of bottles in various sizes and spray paint them in colors that match your party's color scheme. You can paint them all one color or choose several that look good together. Then place a single flower in each bottle, again considering your color scheme. Arrange all of the bottles and flowers in the center of your table.

Paint Place Card Stones

For an extra bit of fun on your table, try painting the names of your guests onto small stones instead of using standard paper place cards. Collect stones with smooth surfaces, which are easier to paint than rough or jagged rocks. Wash them thoroughly to make sure they're clean of any dirt or moss, and then let them dry. If you like the natural color of your stones, just paint the names with a small paintbrush and white paint, or write them with a white poster paint marker. Or you can cover the entire stones in a single coat of paint in the colors of your party, and paint the names in a contrasting color.

Get Creative With Balloons

Balloons may seem like standard party fare, but you can make them fresh and interesting by decorating them to match your party theme. Gather up crafting supplies like crepe paper, paint and glitter, and let your creativity run wild. Paint whimsical designs on your balloons, add crepe paper fringe or streamers, or dip inflated balloons in glue and glitter for a quick, glam update.

Make a Balloon Garland

If you're looking for a fun way to display your balloons, try an easy balloon garland! While these popular decorations may seem intimidating at first, they're easier to achieve than they look. Just start gluing inflated balloons together in groups of four with hot glue. (Always exercise caution when handling hot glue guns.) When you have several groups of balloons, then glue the groups together into the shape you want and attach ribbons to the ends for hanging.

Other Garland Ideas

There's no limit to the types and styles of garlands you can create for your party. You can create garlands of paper chains, pompoms, paper cutouts, handmade tassels or whatever you can think of that would make a festive and whimsical garland. Or for a different take, create a letter garland using decorated cardboard letters. Choose a word that fits the theme of your party, then cut out the letters from cardboard. You can paint the letters, glue on sequins or glitter, or add a design of washi tape to give them a festive touch. Then just hot glue them to a sturdy string and hang your garland when dry. Sometimes, crafting party decorations can be just as fun as the party itself.
